The US Department of Energy (DOE) has published a new report analyzing the potential energy savings of solid-state lighting (SSL), primarily for LED and OLED products. The US Department of Energy predicts that solid state lighting products will save 1,488 megawatt hours of energy during the 2010-2030 period, equivalent to a savings of $120 billion.
The US Department of Energy is actively supporting and funding various SSL lighting initiatives, both to achieve energy savings and to enable the United States to achieve global leadership in SSL technology. This latest report updates the previous forecast for solid state lighting products.
This comprehensive report begins with lighting fixtures and luminous flux requirements and will continue to focus on technical improvements and installations of traditional lighting fixtures.
LED product testing projects include technology improvements and cost savings for solid-state lighting for more than two decades. For example, the report predicts that its performance has improved. For solid-state lighting fixtures with a high display index (CRI: 76-90), DOE expects its light efficiency to increase from the current 64.3 lm/W to 147.3 lm/W in 2020, and in 2030, It reached 176.3lm/W.
From a cost perspective, the US Department of Energy estimates that for products with a high color rendering index, the price of solid-state lighting will drop from today's $169.49 per thousand lumens to $5.03 per thousand lumens in 2030. The report also forecasts other ranges of color rendering indices and OLED lighting fixtures.
The latter part of the report focuses on the assessment of market penetration and the calculation of energy savings.
The US Department of Energy said in the report that solid-state lighting fixtures could reduce emissions of 246 million tons of carbon dioxide over the next two decades.
