Local interconnection network LIN transceiver NCV7321 for automotive applications

ON Semiconductor launched three new products specifically for the automotive terminal market at the Electronica 2010 in Munich, Germany, for the current and next-generation body electronics.

Automotive is one of ON Semiconductor ’s key application markets. The company has a broad lineup of rugged and innovative energy-efficient integrated devices that reduce emissions, save fuel, and enhance lighting, safety, connectivity, and infotainment power systems. ON Semiconductor's devices have passed the AEC certification and production device approval process (PPAP), providing different functions including power management, protection, processing, signal conditioning and control.

The new NCV7321 is a comprehensive local interconnect network LIN transceiver, which is designed to be used as an interface between a LIN protocol controller and a physical bus in low-data-rate in-vehicle network (IVN) applications. NCV7321 provides excellent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), as well as strong system-level electrostatic discharge (ESD) performance up to 13 kV, which eliminates the need for external ESD components and is ideally suited for harsh environments in automotive applications.

Using ON Semiconductor ’s innovative I3T technology, high-voltage and sensitive digital technologies can coexist on the same chip. The NCV7321 is packaged in a high-density, space-saving SOIC-8 package. Typical applications include a variety of body electronic functions such as door locks, power mirrors and seat adjusters, as well as other functions such as electronic steering locks and tire monitoring electronic control units ( ECU).

The NCV7321 achieves the car's power saving target excellently, and the current consumption in sleep mode is only 10 μA. Other key features include thermal shutdown, fuzzy short circuit protection, and 45 V load dump protection.

ON Semiconductor ’s new NCV7608 is an 8-channel configurable low-end / high-end driver. This device is AEC Q10X-12 (Rev. A) certified and is available in a high-density SOIC-28W package. It can operate at a junction temperature of -40 ° C to +150 ° C. NCV7608 has a wide input voltage range of 3.15 V to 5.25 V, and has 8 completely independent output drivers, which can be arbitrarily configured as a combination of high-end, low-end, or half-bridge configurations, providing designers with extremely flexible solutions that need to drive large loads .

The device performs digital control of all output sections through an integrated standard serial peripheral interface. This function also enables diagnostic fault information. In addition, the four channels can be controlled by pulse width modulation (PWM) via external control input pins. The new device has a typical on-resistance (RDSON) of only 1.2 ohms at 25 ° C, which can significantly extend battery life.

The well-specified NCV7608 also provides positive / negative transient protection, overcurrent protection and overtemperature protection functions. Its integrated clamping circuit (in high-end and low-end operating modes) ensures over-temperature protection and under-voltage lockout.

In addition, ON Semiconductor also announced the development of NCV786xx power ballasts and dual LED driver product platforms for advanced LED headlamp systems. This product platform was developed to match the system-level requirements of driving multiple strings of LEDs up to 60 V, maintaining color temperature with PWM dimming, and controlling average current, allowing designers to control high beam with a system-on-chip (SoC) device Lights and low beam lights, daytime running lights, turn indicators and fog lights. The platform can communicate with external microcontrollers, change operating parameters after power-on, detect LED short circuits, and provide advanced system diagnostics.

This product platform will be introduced in the conference paper "Energy Efficient System-on-Chip LED Drivers for Automotive Headlights" at the Munich Electronics Fair Auto Forum. The first product of this platform, NCV78663, will be available in 2011.
