Japan's home appliance industry: production has basically recovered after the earthquake

On March 11, 2011, the outbreak of the Great Earthquake in Japan made Japan a country of great fortune. So, what is the current situation of Japan's home appliance industry production and sales? On September 20, 2011, the tenth China-Japan Association of Household Electrical Appliances Association held by the China Household Electrical Appliances Association and the Japan Motor Industry Association was held in Beijing. At the meeting, Minister of Home Appliances of the Japan Motor Industry Association Nakamura introduced the fiscal year 2010 in Japan. Home appliance industry.

Larger increase in fiscal 2010

In fiscal year 2010 (April 2010-April 2011), Japan's white goods shipments were 2,244.6 billion yen (approximately 178.446 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 13.1%. Since the shipment volume of 229.4 billion yen in fiscal year 2000, Japan’s white electricity shipments have exceeded 2,200 billion yen for the first time in 10 years.

According to Mr. Nakamura, the good performance of white goods sales in 2010 was due to the intensified development of the record-breaking summer weather and home appliance environmental protection points system in the summer. In all categories of home appliances, the sales of air conditioners and refrigerators all increased significantly. Achieve double-digit growth year-on-year since 1994.

In fiscal year 2010, Japan's domestic air conditioner shipments reached 8.338 million units, a year-on-year increase of 20.7%, which is the highest value of shipments since 1972. As of March 2011, the penetration rate of air conditioners in Japan reached 89.2%, and the average air-conditioning capacity per household was 2.6 units, and the penetration rate of inverter air conditioners in Japan was already very high. Most households used inverter air conditioners.

Domestic shipments of refrigerators in Japan have not changed substantially in the past two years and have been maintained at a scale of 4 million units per year. In fiscal year 2010, shipments were 4.447 million units, an increase of 9.2% year-on-year. Because of the habit of purchasing food on weekends, the demand for large-capacity refrigerators in Japan is very strong. Take the 2010 fiscal year data as an example. Large refrigerators with a capacity of 401L or more account for 46.9% of the total sales of refrigerators.

The domestic washing machine market in Japan also showed a steady growth trend, and the product structure was developing toward large capacity. According to statistics, in the fiscal year 2010, shipments of the domestic washing machine market in Japan reached 4.664 million units, an increase of 7.6% year-on-year. In terms of product structure, the market share of old dual-cylinder washing machines has fallen below 5%; as in the Chinese market, fully automatic washing machines Occupy the largest share of the Japanese washing machine market, accounting for about 6 percent, while the market share of more than 8 kg of automatic washing machines accounted for 34.4%, an increase of 12.7%.

At the same time, in fiscal year 2010, Japan's domestic washing and drying machine shipments totaled 1.315 million units, a year-on-year increase of 6.7%, and accounted for about 30% of the overall washing machine market share.

Post-earthquake production recovery

After the earthquake in Japan, the production of home appliance companies was greatly affected. Nakamura said: "In mid-April, the Japanese motor industry conducted a survey of member companies and received reports of disasters from 65 companies. Among them, 25 companies were partially damaged and more than 40 companies were affected in terms of logistics. Production in Tohoku, Japan Semiconductors and other electronic components have many companies and are affected by earthquakes."

In addition to the impact on the company, some parts of Japan's supply chain and logistics infrastructure are basically "collapsed." In the disaster-affected areas, parts and materials procurement companies have been severely affected, including not only the first-class component manufacturing companies but also the second- and third-tier suppliers. After the earthquake, some special materials rose rapidly due to insufficient supply. At the same time, due to severe disasters in transportation lines such as roads and railways, fuel, electricity, and raw materials cannot be transported in time, which has a major impact on the production of household appliances.

At the same time, Nakamura said that after the earthquake, home appliance companies started self-rescue measures. Since mid-May, home appliance companies resumed production. Among them, factory reconstruction work has progressed smoothly. Currently, 80% to 100% of the total reconstruction has been completed. However, the affected areas and some factories that have suffered serious damages are still unable to produce. Some of the more severely affected SMEs have switched their main components to external orders, borrowing factories from the parent company to set up temporary production lines or resume production through new production systems. At the same time, Japan’s major infrastructure such as roads and railways has been rapidly rehabilitated. Although the recovery of the port transportation has been slow, it has been replaced by other means of transportation. This problem has had little impact on home appliance companies and the logistics system has basically recovered.

From the post-quake shipment status of home appliances of all categories, it can also be seen that the "general strength" of Japan's home appliance industry has basically recovered. According to data released by the Japan Motor Industry Association, cumulative shipments of the Japanese air-conditioning market totaled 4.43 million units from April to July 2011, a year-on-year increase of 14%, and maintained high growth after 2010. However, analysis of sales data for July and August 2011 shows that air conditioner shipments in the Japanese market have declined, with shipments in July alone registering 94.1% of the same period in 2010, compared with 68% in the month of August. .

From April to July 2011, the total domestic refrigerator shipments in Japan were 1.576 million units, which represented a year-on-year increase of 9.2%. However, shipments in July and August also declined. Among them, July shipments were equivalent to 98% in the same period of last year. In August, the figure was even lower, at 85.3%. The shipments of washing machines from April to July were 1.696 million, an increase of 8.6% year-on-year.
