Construct FTTx access layer network

In the context of global fixed-line operators dedicated to improving network bandwidth provision capabilities and service provision capabilities, "optical access to copper" has become the general trend. Fully exploiting the low cost and long service life of optical fiber, as well as the characteristics of flexible copper wiring and strong bandwidth provision capabilities, FTTx access layer networks with strong construction service provision capabilities, convenient maintenance and management, and low overall construction costs have become global operations Business goals. Based on the above market requirements, ZTE Corporation puts forward the goal of building a robust FTTx network and provides a series of solutions.

FTTx network, combined with the progress of the "optical in copper" project, there are various solutions. Different solutions have different environments and network adaptability. The actual network construction needs to be determined according to the actual conditions. The composition of the FTTx solution is shown in Figure 1.


FTTx solution, according to the flexible combination of optical fiber and copper wire, provides FTTB, FTTC, FTTN, FTTH and other solutions. Among them, FTTH is the ultimate goal of the access layer network. In the process of achieving this goal, FTTB / C and FTTN will be used as a transitional solution to meet the access needs of some regions and users. At the same time, considering network evolution and convergence, FTTB / C and FTTN have the ability to evolve to FTTH. When fiber conditions are met, FTTH can be achieved through software upgrades and equipment board optimization.

To build a robust FTTx network, you need to fully consider the following factors:

1. Flexible service delivery capabilities

FTTx network, a broadband network transformation for access layer network, provides integrated voice, data, and multimedia service solutions for end users.

(1) Data business solution

The FTTx network has unique advantages in providing data services. Whether FTTB / C or FTTH is used, the main purpose is to improve the bandwidth providing capability of the entire access layer network. According to the current end user's demand for HSI services, the future demand for data services is about 2 ~ 4M. The FTTx solution based on xPON technology has the advantage of inherently high bandwidth.

(2) Voice business solution

In the FTTx solution, there are two ways to provide voice services: IP-based VoIP and TDM-based voice business. As the global fixed network evolves into an all-IP network, IP-based VoIP voice service provision will become mainstream. In the FTTx solution, since the ONU capacity of the final access user is getting smaller, it has become the mainstream way to provide VoIP services through the built-in VoIP module in the ONU. At this stage, the MDU, MTU, SFU and other serialized ONU devices in the FTTx solution have built-in VoIP modules to provide voice service access.

(3) Multimedia business solution

Multimedia services are mainly IPTV and video services in FTTx networks. The IPTV service is a business with extensive development space in the later period. In the FTTx network, due to the use of an all-IP-based network platform, it provides good support for the IPTV service in terms of multicast protocol support and bandwidth provision.

(4) MulTI-Play service provision

FTTx usually adopts the OLT + ONU mode on the network, and can implement the MulTI-Play service development by combining WiMAX, WLAN and other wireless technologies.

2. Super adaptability of construction environment

In the process of FTTx network deployment and construction, for the construction environment such as new network construction and network reconstruction, the network needs to have strong environmental adaptability, and different solutions can be selected according to the actual network construction requirements and environmental resources.

The FTTH solution uses fiber-optic access to the home and places ONU terminals indoors to provide multiple service access. You can use single FE or multiple FE, multiple POTS interface types to achieve user terminal access. For the FTTB / C solution, depending on the construction environment, it is adaptable in terms of line entry method and ONU equipment MDU placement, as shown in Table 1.

3. Simple and convenient operation and maintenance management

The management of the FTTx network becomes more complicated because it involves multiple ONU types. Faced with such a complicated network device, a simple and convenient solution must be provided in network management, so that OPEX can be reduced when the number of network access devices increases. For FTTH network terminal equipment, the final management mode should be based on TR069 protocol management mode; for FTTB type ONU equipment management, the use of SNMP + OAM management mode is more reasonable. At the same time, FTTx will form a unified access system for the fixed network access layer network. In the FTTB, FTTN, FTTC and other access methods, it is necessary to manage the equipment in a unified manner and realize centralized monitoring and centralized operation on one platform. Unified management of the voice service processing module and data service processing module of the ONU built in FTTB / C and FTTN modes.

4. Sustained technological evolution capability

The choice of technology and construction model needs to consider its ability to continuously evolve. For the FTTx solution with xPON as the core, it also faces such problems. From the perspective of network evolution, FTTH is the ultimate development goal of the access layer network. However, the access layer network built by FTTB / C / N needs to realize the evolution of the network and technology in a low-cost way. Network evolution is the ability of FTTB / C / N to evolve to FTTH; technology evolution is the ability to upgrade to 10GE service bandwidth later on the existing 1GE service bandwidth platform.

FTTB / C / N upgrade to FTTH adopts two methods of extensive equipment replacement and fine technical upgrade. Extensive equipment replacement is to replace the ONU in the FTTB solution with Splitter in the process of evolution to FTTH, and deploy the fiber for the household under the Splitter; the refined technology upgrade method is to carry out the technology on the OLT equipment in the FTTB solution. Upgraded to provide higher service bandwidth, the current expected bandwidth is 10GE.
