Hong Kong Polytechnic University develops PWM technology to improve LED system efficiency

Thanks to the high-performance LED drivers recently developed by researchers from the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, LED lights can be brighter and more energy efficient than ever.
This award-winning high-efficiency technology can be applied to many areas, such as LED billboards, and can save 15% more energy.
The new driver uses innovative multi-level PWM technology to power LEDs, which significantly improves light quality and energy efficiency compared to the PWM and linear drivers used in current LED products. This approach is not limited to LED drivers and offers many more benefits and options than PWM or constant current modes.
With the traditional PWM method, the current received by the LED is pulsed instead of DC. This drive current is quickly switched at a speed that is undetectable by the human eye. Powering the LEDs with a pulsed current makes the light output easier to control.
A research team led by Dr. LaiYukMing, Dr. Loo KaHong and Professor Michael Tse, who changed the PWM approach. Pulsed operation is a redesign that maximizes light output while minimizing thermal energy consumption. Thereby achieving higher luminous efficiency (lm/W). Dr. Loo KaHong believes that their technology can save 15% more energy.
In large-scale applications, the energy-saving effect is more significant. A billboard for the OneTimes Square building in New York is a good example. The huge display in the building uses 12 million xenon lamps and has a power of 250 kW. If the billboard works 16 hours a day, then the monthly electricity bill is $18,000. Saving 12% means saving $2,160.

Thanks to its excellent dimming capability, this new PWM driver allows manufacturers to create fully dimmable LEDs for dimming performance down to 0 watts.
