What are the mainstream naked-eye 3D technologies?

"Avatar", which had set a box office record, gave the audience an unprecedented sense of reality, but to wear this 3D technology, they must wear special 3D glasses, which somewhat discomfort the audience. If you just wear 3D glasses for movie watching, it would be fine. But if you use 3D glasses like a mobile phone, it will be very troublesome. If you want to experience 3D without wearing your eyes, you need to use naked-eye 3D technology.

At present, the naked-eye 3D mainly has four types of light barrier type, lenticular lens technology, pointing light source and MLD technology.

Light barrier

These stripes are several tens of micrometers wide, and their light forms a vertical thin-gate pattern called a "parallax barrier." The technology utilizes the parallax barrier disposed between the backlight module and the LCD panel. In the stereoscopic display mode, when the image that should be seen by the left eye is displayed on the liquid crystal screen, the opaque stripes will block the right eye; similarly, When the image that should be seen by the right eye is displayed on the LCD screen, the opaque stripes will block the left eye, and the viewer can see the 3D image by separating the visible images of the left and right eyes.

The advantage of this technology is that it has an advantage in cost. At present, 3D mobile phones like Sharp and Nintendo's 3DS game consoles use this technology. However, the screen brightness using this technology is low.

Cylindrical lens technology

The lenticular lens technique, also known as lenticular or microcolumn lens 3D technology, has the greatest advantage that its brightness is not affected. The principle of the lenticular lens 3D technology is to add a lenticular lens to the front of the liquid crystal display so that the image plane of the liquid crystal panel is located on the focal plane of the lens, so that the pixels of the image under each cylindrical lens are divided into several sub-pixels. This allows the lens to project each sub-pixel in a different direction. Then the eyes look at the display from different angles and see different sub-pixels.

The lenticular lens technology does not affect the screen brightness like the light barrier type, so it is better than the latter. Representative manufacturers of this technology are Philips in Europe, Langchen Electronic Technology in China, and Wofei Naked Eye 3D.

Pointing light source

Pointing light source 3D technology with two sets of LEDs, with fast response LCD panel and driving method, let 3D content enter the viewer's left and right eye interchangeable images to produce parallax, and then let people feel the 3D three-dimensional effect.

MLD technology

The United States PureDepth MLD (mulTI-layer display multi-layer display) technology can achieve the effect of 3D images in text and pictures without using special glasses by two LCD panels that overlap at regular intervals. This technique has the advantage that the user does not suffer from side effects such as dizziness, headache, etc., and there is no limit to the viewing angle of the viewer.

Although the current 3D technology is still immature, especially in terms of resolution, viewing angle and visual distance, there are still many shortcomings. However, with the development of technology, I believe that in the near future, we can not wear glasses in our own Experience realistic 3D effects on your phone.
