SigmaTel has introduced the STMP3600, a new system-on-chip (SoC) solution for flash and hard disk digital multimedia players. It enables customers to design and develop digital multimedia players with longer battery life, smaller size, and greater processing power at a lower overall system cost.

By integrating battery charging, power management, audio codecs and flash controllers on a single chip, SigmaTel STMP3600 solutions can achieve up to 80% longer battery life than existing high-capacity flash-based players. Smaller size. The solution supports major audio codecs, including MP3, Windows Media Audio, AAC and OGG Vorbis, providing industry-leading audio quality (based on tests using Rhode and Schwarz audio analyzer technology). In addition to world-class sound quality, the STMP3600 also supports MPEG4, H.264 and WMV9 video encoders/decoders, and can accommodate different resolutions and bit rates.

Based on the ARM926EJ-S CPU operating at 200MHz, the STMP3600 integrates USB 2.0 mainframe and devices, USB On-The-Go and VFIR, and a digital radio interface that supports SigmaTel's upcoming FM tuner solution. The STMP3600-based high-capacity flash-based player can drive from an external SDRAM of only 2MB, which is equivalent to a system of the same type that typically requires 16 to 32MB.

In addition to the STMP3600, SigmaTel also introduced version 4.1 of the STMP3600 Software Development Kit (SDK) based on Microsoft Digital Rights Management (DRM) version 10, which supports Microsoft PlaysForSure version 1.2. In the first quarter of 2006, after Microsoft introduced PlaysForSure 1.5, SigmaTel will also add support. SDK 4.1 is based on Express Logic's ThreadX (RTOS), and the board support package for the Linux operating system is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2006.

SigmaTel will begin supplying the flash memory and hard disk reference designs developed with the STMP3600 in the fourth quarter of 2005, including all solids, printed circuit boards and components. Among them, the hard disk type reference design developed by STMP3600 will introduce the file management and user interface developed by SigmaTel's Cambridge design team to reflect the distinctive high-capacity performance.

STMP3600 and SDK 4.1 are now available for production orders from SigmaTel Beta customers. Customers who wish to order SDK 4.1 can contact SigmaTel's office in Shenzhen or Hong Kong, see or send an email to.
