SolarCity Chairman Elon Musk revealed at a recent earnings conference call that the company’s next heavyweight product will be a “solar roof†made entirely of solar panels, compared to laying solar panels on ordinary roofs. This solution is not only "a lot more beautiful," but also has a longer life than a normal roof.
SolarCity's solar roof integrates one of Tesla's standby power sources for storing solar-converted electricity, allowing users to continue using solar energy at night. This level of integration between Tesla and SolarCity is also what Elon Musk hopes to achieve through mergers and acquisitions.
It is reported that SolarCity hopes to reverse the decrease in the installed capacity of solar panels through this product. The specific method is to attract customers who need to completely renovate the roof. Musk said that if he knew that his roof would soon need to be replaced, people would not install solar panels, which would create a huge market segment that SolarCity could not currently reach. According to statistics, there are 5 million households in the U.S. that need to be renovated every year.
