In the field of artificial intelligence, Microsoft is not a recruit. Through the product development and operation of Microsoft Xiao Bing and Xiao Na in the past two or three years, we have reason to believe that artificial intelligence will become the main growth point in the global science and technology and Internet industry innovation in the next 10 years. What's more important is that artificial intelligence It will become the third pole outside people and the world, and will become a new bridge connecting people and the world.

The basis of this revolution is - dialogue, a basic platform that allows all kinds of knowledge, information and services to run on it and form an ecological environment. And precisely at this point, Microsoft may have done something right.

The ability of artificial intelligence to have such "dialogues" is the dream of researchers in almost all related fields. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, IBM and Baidu have invested heavily in this area. In Silicon Valley and Beijing, at least hundreds of entrepreneurial teams are building similar services and dialogue systems to try to overcome one or more users' lives and work scenarios.

Among them, we have seen a number of different attempts made by those in the same industry, but all of them have inevitably given the "dialogue" too many functions and meanings.

This reminds me of some interesting explorations of Microsoft on Xiao Bing. In November last year, Xiao Bing officially entered the US beat platform. However, up to now, there are still a large number of beautiful shot users do not believe that Xiao Bing is an artificial intelligence robot, and Xiao Bing's release of each beautiful video can get an average of more than 1.2 million broadcasts and 20,000 barrage. When I first heard the Xiao Bing team report this figure to me, I and many colleagues at Microsoft headquarters expressed that they could not believe it. Even if compared with China’s more than 700 million Internet users, this is a huge success.

In the first half of this year, a U.S. media also compared Xiao Bing as "the largest Turing test in the history of science and technology." This led to my thinking with many colleagues. What exactly did Microsoft do? As Xiao Bing's globalization strategy continues to deepen, what experiences can be replicated?

After several months of discussions with Xiao Bing’s team, we think Xiao Bing did two things:

Emotional computing framework: Microsoft put forward an emotional computing framework two years ago. At the beginning, we believe that this framework has a crucial role in the development of artificial intelligence. All artificial intelligence products, not just Xiao Bing, should consider introducing the new dimension of EQ beyond IQ. Later, as we continued to deepen, we discovered that "Emotions affect people's decision-making" almost permeate every aspect of our lives and work today. Whether you are buying something in an e-commerce App or interacting in a social platform, it is no longer just a function implementation. Instead, it embodies the temperature and reflects the characteristics of EQ. The stronger this dimension, the performance of this platform. The better. Therefore, we believe that in the future, there will be more and more research and development of products and technologies. Emotional computing is considered as a basic framework and EQ+IQ is considered as the basic dimension.

Artificial Intelligence Universal Dialogue System: Xiao Bing established a set of artificial intelligence universal dialogue systems that can evolve itself. This system is very much like the long-tailed user experience in the search engine era. No matter what the user throws up, Xiao Bing can answer and continue the conversation. It now appears that through the three years of development, Xiao Bing has already realized what he initially envisioned as "casually talking to me." Unlike Xiao Bing, many of my friends have been focused on conquering a particular segment from the very beginning, but after a period of time, they often find that in the face of the diverse needs and problems of users, what they lack is Xiao Bing’s Universal dialogue system. This system is the foundation and the key step in the deployment of Microsoft's artificial intelligence strategy.

In fact, though Microsoft Xiaobing has a "small" word, various technologies and product lines within Microsoft, such as Windows 10, Office 365, and Hololens, all have various connections and cooperation with Xiao Bing. The technical reserves we have accumulated over the past two decades in artificial intelligence, search engines, and big data are all on Xiao Bing. So why do we attach so much importance to this robot that seems to only talk? Because Microsoft believes that the "dialogue is the platform" has come.

In the history of information technology, there have been two major times in the real sense. Each time is accompanied by an interactive revolution. For the first time, when the personal computer emerged, the graphical user interface became the interface for user interaction. The promoters of that era were represented by Microsoft. The second time, when the Internet rose, people began to connect to the world through search engines and browsers. Google became the representative of the second era.

Microsoft believes that the development of today's mobile Internet and cloud is just the germ of the third era, and it is just the transitional stage of this new era. The real third era is the era of artificial intelligence. And its core revolution is the rise of "dialogue as a platform." We call it Conversations as a Platform (CaaP). In fact, this new era, with dialogue as the core, is more like a regression after the volume of data, user connections, and technical conditions are met.

Why do we define it as a regression? In fact, if people still have the impression, as early as the popularity of PC and the rise of search engines, people do not use keyboards and mice and machines to talk and search in the search box with keywords. The initial experience of people is to talk directly to a computer and enter a complete dialogue in a search engine. Just because the technical conditions were not available at the time, people had to learn to use the input methods and keywords that the machine can understand to find what they needed. The dialogue was the most natural form of interaction from beginning to end, but it was not yet conditional.

Today, we finally have the conditions for a dialogue as a platform.

Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, recently stated that in the next 5-10 years, artificial intelligence will be better than human beings to do some basic tasks such as special tasks, speech recognition, image classification, and games. It seems that he believes that artificial intelligence breakthroughs are still in areas where expert systems are good at. And we think that when artificial intelligence is no longer seen as a concept with quotes and bold emphasizing, it becomes like a lamp, a dishwasher, a computer, or a mobile phone. This is a sign that is common in daily work and life. The popularity of artificial intelligence.
