Cypress Semiconductor, a leader in the capacitive touch sensing market, today announced that TechInsight's Teardown.com website found Cypress's TrueTouch® Gen5 controller in Samsung's new Gear Live smartwatch that drives its touchscreen. Gear Live's disassembly report found that Cypress's TMA545 controller was used to drive the touch screen, and Gear Live used the waterproof features of the Gen5 solution and the touch-wake mode to help extend battery life. Gear Live can connect to an Android smartphone as an attractive wearable functional device to receive notifications and other content.
Stacy Wegner, a product analyst at Teardown.com, confirmed that Cypress's controllers replaced Samsung's competitors in the previous two generations of smart watches (Gear and Gear 2 Neo). The disassembly report also found that this design uses only a portion of the controller's 33 sensing lines, which can help smart watches save power and extend battery life.
Joe Montalbo, vice president of Cypress's TrueTouch business unit, said: "The wearable electronics market is experiencing a geometric progression, and TrueTouch's waterproof, low power and other features will prove to be the best solution for this type of application. We are delighted to see TrueTouch and our new customers in the future create these innovative products and display devices."
Using Cypress's patented DualSenseTM technology, Gen5 performs self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance sensing on the same device, providing the industry's best waterproofing capability for seamless operation in a variety of real-world environments, including It is raining, full of water or sweat. Combined with this powerful architecture and the industry's leading 32-bit ARM CortexTM M-Core processor, known for its high efficiency MIPS/mW, Gen5 increases the refresh rate to 120Hz while reducing power consumption. The Gen5 controller can drive the touch screen with 10V, high-frequency narrow-band single-pass scanning and advanced hardware DSP filtering.
Electronic noise from screens and non-original chargers can interfere with the normal operation of the touch screen. The ChargerArmorTM feature of the TrueTouch Gen5 family of devices delivers unprecedented peak-to-peak voltage (Vpp) of up to 40 volts from 1 to 500 kHz with 0.5 mm ultra-thick cover (Cover Lens) and 22 mm finger touch. The industry's best resistance to charger noise, while other controllers are unable to provide more than 15 Vpp of noise immunity under the same conditions. Behind the unique features of TrueTouch is Cypress's industry-leading patent of more than 100 capacitive touch sensors.
