Recently, the topic about driverless cars has been very hot. It is predicted that by 2025, driverless cars will account for 10% of global car sales, with annual sales exceeding 10 million. Some domestic Internet companies have slogans for making driverless cars, and they have to subvert the Chinese auto industry.
Some people think that given the road conditions in China, it is difficult for a driverless car to form a climate within 20 years. However, autonomous driving technology will be increasingly applied to cars.
The goals of the two proposals are actually different.
At the "two sessions" this year, Li Shufu, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and chairman of Geely Holding, submitted a proposal to require the state to speed up the automatic driving legislation. He believes that autonomous driving can effectively reduce traffic accident mortality, improve road safety, ease traffic congestion, and enhance driving comfort.
Coincidentally, Li Yanhong, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, founder, chairman and CEO of Baidu, also submitted a proposal for driverless cars. It is recommended that the state revise and improve the laws and regulations related to driverless driving as soon as possible, provide institutional guarantee for the development, testing and commercial application of driverless vehicles, and promote the establishment and improvement of technical standards related to driverless vehicles.
It has been reported that if Li Shufu and Li Yanhong's proposal is implemented, it will vigorously promote the development of smart connected cars and driverless cars in China.
However, according to Li Shufu, its proposal is not the same as that of Li Yanhong's proposal. Autopilot and driverless are not the same thing, although many of the two technologies are the same.
Li Shufu believes that the global automotive industry is entering the era of intelligence and entering a new phase of integration of automobiles and the Internet. Internet of vehicles, artificial intelligence and autonomous driving are the three technologies of smart connected cars, and autonomous driving is the direction of integration.
Autopilot provides people with the freedom to choose between man-made vehicles and autonomous driving, in line with Volvo's "people-oriented" philosophy. The driverless car that Internet companies have to do does not consider the choice of people's driving needs. The same technology, different ideas. Compared with unmanned driving, automatic driving is more grounded and more respectful of people's choices.
Autopilot technology has been widely used
As early as more than 20 years ago, the automotive industry began to develop autonomous driving technology, and a large number of applications in the car. The most typical is the automatic cruise technology. After setting the speed, the driver can just hold the steering wheel without stepping on the throttle. The car travels at a constant speed at a set speed.
The newly launched ACC intelligent adaptive cruise system, through radar detection, can automatically adjust the distance from the preceding vehicle, automatically accelerate and decelerate, and maintain the set speed. Volvo Car's car safety technology, in non-cruising mode, can also automatically decelerate or brake according to the distance of the pedestrian or vehicle.
After years of hard research and development, Volvo has advanced its autonomous driving technology from the experimental stage to the mass production stage. The XC90 is the world's first car with a high degree of autopilot. It has achieved great success since its listing in March last year, with global sales exceeding 100,000 units. The new Volvo S90 sedan has been able to drive at 130 km/h.
In terms of autonomous driving technology, Geely Automobile is also at the forefront of domestic auto companies. The first smart connected boutique SUN Geely Bo Yue, which was listed on March 26, has adopted a large number of automatic driving technologies. In addition to ABS, automatic parking and other technologies, Geely Bo Yue is also equipped with an urban pre-crash safety system. In the case of deceleration and parking before the sudden collision, the system automatically alarms 1.5 seconds before the collision, and automatically brakes when the collision is 1 second. With the EBA brake assist, when the speed is less than 30 km, the front stationary target can be automatically braked to avoid collision.
The latest ACC intelligent adaptive cruise system from Bosch, equipped with Geely Bo Yue, has a maximum detection range of 160 meters and a radar opening angle of plus or minus 45 degrees. If there is a traffic jam in the car during driving, you can detect it earlier and automatically adjust the speed and distance to ensure safe driving. In terms of smart safety and intelligent driving, Geely Bo has led the SUV in its class and set a new benchmark in the industry.
The unmanned parking technology developed by BYD has been applied to individual production models. Many foreign brand cars sold in China also use a large number of automatic driving technologies.
Promoting unmanned driving faces many bottlenecks
California, USA passed a bill in 2012 that allows driverless cars to test on the road, but requires legitimate drivers to sit in the driver's seat while driving, and to operate the car in an emergency.
Google’s driverless cars have been road trials since 2010, and several cars have ran hundreds of thousands of kilometers. In addition to Google, there are also multinational auto companies such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo. These driverless cars have a driver in their seats and are not really unmanned. The test car is equipped with both automatic driving and manual driving modes, and the test uses an automatic driving mode. In fact, it is more accurate to call it a self-driving car.
Automated driving technology is also widely used in civil aircraft and subways. Civil aviation aircraft use autonomous driving techniques to take off, cruise and land, but pilots are still essential.
At present, only drones are truly unmanned. The drone does not require a driver and relies entirely on intelligent maneuvers. Not only can the investigation be completed, but missiles can also be carried to attack ground targets. The drone is flying in the sky, there is no traffic jam on the road, no complicated road conditions, and it is much easier than the driverless car.
Mr. Brin, one of the founders of Google, believes that driverless cars can make roads safer, freeing office workers from the stagnation of driving and alleviating congestion. At the same time, people who are unable to drive, including blind people and disabled people, are expected to drive their dreams with unmanned driving.
However, there are also opinions that the automatic driving mode can reduce the burden on the driver in a specific environment, such as on a highway. However, it will greatly reduce the fun of driving.
As one of the human travel tools, the first priority is to ensure the safety of the occupants. In the case that driverless technology cannot guarantee 100% security, it is not only facing technical bottlenecks but also facing policy bottlenecks and ethical bottlenecks. There are also conflicts with current road safety traffic regulations. For a long time to come, driverless cars will continue to be tested and improved. Automated driving technology will be increasingly applied to production models to help drivers improve vehicle safety and reduce accidents.
Many Internet companies are fascinated by driverless cars, which is considered to be a huge business opportunity and will become a potential gold mine. However, this gold mine is only a short-term painting, and automatic driving is a gold mine that can be seen and touched.
