Google Project Soli debut
At the Google I/O 2015 conference, with an agile team as the core, the company worked with companies and research institutes from all walks of life to establish a collaborative approach, and the Google ATAP team for cross-border research shared His latest developments in human-computer interaction include Project Soli and Project Jacquard.
Project Soli is an interactive system based on radio wave reflection. Radio waves of 5mm wavelength have the ability to capture fine motion within a 5m spatial range. However, the technical challenge is that the current radio wave transmitters on the market are too large. Project Soli's goal is to make the radio wave transmitter + receiver on the watch, integrating the radio wave transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna in a quarter coin size chip.
Project Soli has developed a chip that is as large as a fingernail and can be embedded in different types of electronic products. The radar emitted by the chip can accurately detect the user's hand movements, and specific gestures can be adjusted to different settings, such as volume, zoom in and out, and even power on and off.
Project Jacquard is a project that implants human-computer interaction interfaces into textiles (ie clothing). The annual output of clothing (10 billion yuan) is about 100 times higher than that of smart phones (100 million). It is a huge market, but it has the following technical challenges: 1. The production process can be integrated into the factory production process of textiles; 2. Electronics The circuit and chip are not afraid of the high temperature of ironing, the blisters of the washing machine, and the damage caused by the user during the wearing process.
While the Jacquard Touch Fiber Project and Soli still remain in ATAP, Soli has at least one new ambitious goal: to create a consumer electronics industry with a radar technology and a design language.
Project Soli progress
Following the debut in 2015, the Project Soli Gesture Remote Control concept has been further demonstrated this year. At the Google I/O 2016 conference, the prototype of the smart watch and wireless speaker, which is completely controlled by gestures, is the first time. The smart watch is a modified LG Urbane that can sense the distance and movement of your hand. When it is farthest away, it is an ordinary time display surface. As the finger approaches, more and more functions will appear, and when it is far away, the surface will come back.
In addition to LG, the Soli team also made this technology into a JBL sound, but here the range that it can "see" is much larger, and it can judge the gesture of the whole hand, like "like". It can represent the next song.
With a radar detection update rate of 18,000 FPS, Soli can "see" quite a subtle movement, even with a licking of his fingers. Ivan Poupyrev, head of Google's ATAP technology project, said: "By enabling mobile and fixed terminals to implement a third form of interaction, gesture sensing brings new opportunities to radically change human-computer interaction. This will fill existing gaps in touch and A convenient alternative interaction scheme is added to the voice control interaction."
Infineon and Google ATAP hope to meet the needs of many markets including home entertainment, mobile terminals and the Internet of Things (IoT) with "Solli" radar technology.
Urschitz, President of Infineon's Power Management and Diversified Markets Division, said: "Our goal is to create new market standards that deliver superior performance and a new user experience to create the core technology for augmented reality and the Internet of Things." Reality technology has brought us an immersive feeling, but so far, users can't interact with it. The 60 GHz radar application developed by Google and Infineon fills the gap as a key technology for augmented reality.
The purpose of ATAP is not only to prove the theoretical possibilities of such products, but also to cooperate with companies such as LG, Qualcomm and JBL, and to prove to these companies that they can launch products on the market.
