GT Advanced Technologies Inc. (GTAT) has published a case study of the impact of sapphire material quality on LED wafer processing. The report details the findings of a blind material study that investigates the impact of sapphire material quality on high-brightness LED ready-to-use epitaxial processes. Research shows that the quality of sapphire material has a direct impact on LED wafer production. Among the four material suppliers tested, GT Advanced Sapphire Furnace (ASFTM) sapphire growth material can achieve the highest wafer yield.
Cheryl Diuguid, vice president and general manager of the sapphire materials and equipment division, said: "GT has been providing sapphire for the LED industry for more than 12 years. We launched this evaluation project to verify the positive feedback we have heard from our materials customers - ASF Sapphire growth materials have superior quality and can have a beneficial impact on wafer throughput. Wafer production is especially important for wafer manufacturers because it has a direct impact on their economy. The data shows that different sources of sapphire materials can make Wafer production varies, and GT's ASF material performs best."
The study evaluated 25 core samples from GT ASF and three other sapphire suppliers. In order to obtain fair data, GT has partnered with an independent leading wafer manufacturer to provide a blind, unmarked source of materials. The important wafer parameters collected (which can affect throughput and cost) include wafer geometry (surface roughness, total thickness variation, curvature and curvature) and wafer rejection.
