21ic Intersil Corporation today announced the launch of a highly integrated analog video decoder - TW9990. It reduces the need for external op amps while providing superior performance through programmable battery short and ground short detection. The TW9990 video decoder is ideal for reversing rear view systems and other camera system applications.

Rear view systems have become a popular driving safety feature. According to the Edmunds market survey, 70% of the new cars in 2012 are equipped with a rear camera. In addition, according to a survey by leading market research firm iSuppli, 9 out of 10 new cars offer an option as a center console screen. Video quality and the cost and footprint of camera solutions are key factors when considering adding this important safety feature to new cars.
The TW9990 Video Decoder is a low power analog video decoder that supports single-ended, differential and pseudo differential composite video inputs and S-Video in NTSC/PAL/SECAM. All analog video standards can be decoded with a single 27MHz crystal. For composite inputs, the typical power consumption is approximately 100mW. Power-down mode can also help to further reduce power consumption.
Cables used in video transmission for most in-vehicle analog camera systems use differential twisted pair cables to reduce common mode noise. Traditional analog video decoders only support single-ended inputs, which means that automotive system designers must place an op amp in front of the decoder to convert the differential signal into a single-ended signal. The TW9990 video decoder directly supports differential composite video signals, eliminating the need for external op amps and saving associated costs. It also supports programmable battery short and ground short detection. This is the basic function that OEMs need to support differential signal input.
