Google Promotions Project Fi: Free Wi-Fi for All Nexus Devices

Lei Feng network (search "Lei Feng network" public concern) was informed that Google recently announced that its virtual operator services Project Fi will be free to open deployment in the United States more than 1 million WiFi hotspots, but only for all Nexus device users. As a result, for subscribers who are not Project Fi projects (ie, SIM cards that do not use Fi projects), regardless of which traditional telecom carrier network package they currently use, if they are Nexus devices, they will be able to Google "Project Fi" App safely and conveniently connects the device to a free public WiFi hotspot.

The Project Fi project here is Google's online virtual network operator service launched in April last year. The project uses a large number of open WiFi hotspot signals from the United States as the main component (this is also the meaning of the project name Fi). The coverage area of the WiFi network will be seamlessly switched to the cellular networks of traditional operators such as T-Mobile and Sprint as alternatives, providing users with fast and preferential voice and data communication services in the form of pure Internet data.

The service was only released for unsecured Nexus 6 mobile phone users when it was launched last year, and it needs to be submitted on the Google Fi homepage (fi.google.com) before it is approved for Google to send Fi service SIM cards. At the time, there was only one kind of package plan available: $20/month + $10 for "Data Budget" per GB of traffic. However, it is more humane, the user does not use the flow service fee will be automatically returned to continue to use next month.

Later in March this year, Google announced the full opening of the Project Fi project. All U.S. users can apply for the program, but it is still limited to Nexus devices, and users need to replace the Fi project's SIM card. Google also specifically lowered the price of the Nexus 5X smartphone for this purpose, and encouraged consumers to purchase the phone and activate it through the Project Fi service. The price reduction at that time was as high as 150 US dollars.

Although the intensity is high, the effect does not seem ideal. According to media investigations, the biggest obstacle for users to use Fi projects is not that Fi services are not good (although there are indeed regions where neither WiFi nor T-Mobile and Sprint cellular coverage by the two operators), but because of the need to replace Fi projects. SIM card, the process is too cumbersome. As a result, Google has recently launched a free WiFi program for all Nexus devices.

This promotion plan is not limited to Fi service subscribers, as long as the Nexus device will be able to connect to a nearby public WiFi network via Google’s “Project Fi” App, and in order to ensure that data is transmitted on public networks. In terms of security, Google has established a VPN proxy specifically for the Fi network connection. All user data will be transmitted over the Internet after being encrypted by Google.

Simon Arscott, the general manager of Google Project Fi, said that by exploring multiple ways to promote technology from Project Fi to more mainstream products to benefit more users, this is part of Google's plan. He said:

"Project Fi is a testing platform for innovative concepts. Through the Nexus product line, we believe this is a good opportunity to promote this technology to more users."
