An interesting news from the MIT Technology Review, a Swiss company Pix4D launched a project at the end of last year with a combination of drone manufacturer Aeryon Labs and Brazilian PUC University in Brazil: Utilizing drones High-precision 3D stereo scanning of the iconic building of Rio, up to 30 meters. Last month, the 3D digital model of Christ's image was completed with very high precision and the error may be only about 2-5 cm.
They used drones to capture more than 2,000 photos of Christ images from different angles, and then used Pix4D software to compare, overlap and stitch the photos to create a highly accurate 3D digital model.
In fact, outdoor 3D image digital technology is now more common, except that it has been using airborne lidar to perform 3D data measurement on buildings or topography to construct 3D digital models. Both Google and Apple's 3D urban architecture virtual reality models utilize very expensive and complex onboard equipment for picture capture and data capture, and rely heavily on high-precision GPS positioning. Compared to such "expensive and expensive" technology and equipment, small drones can help people get high-precision 3D digital models in a very cheap way.
This technology can provide very economical and practical help for real-life restoration of some architectural monuments, construction of 3D digital models of large buildings, and even the presentation of special scenes of movies, especially for buildings like Christ. When the position and the onboard Lidar cannot be used for 3D scanning, the drone can play its great role.
