According to media reports, the Research Institute of Physics of the Korea Academy of Science and Technology (KAIST) has recently developed a technology that produces phosphor-free white LEDs. The phosphor is replaced by a semiconductor chip, and the top is a concentric pyramid structure, which is designed as a composite structure. Through the development of 3D semiconductor process, a single-chip white light source with low cost and high color reproducibility without phosphor is obtained.
At present, most of the white LEDs use a blue chip combined with a yellow phosphor, or a mixture of multiple color LEDs to produce a white LED. In KAIST's view, yellow phosphors are rare earths that must be imported, have low color rendering, and the possibility of discoloration. The cost of combining multiple colors of LEDs is high, and the emergence of a single-chip white light source can solve the above problems. .
“In fact, as early as 2014, the concept of white light chips without phosphors has been proposed. However, due to the large investment in equipment in the early stage and the complicated process, the price is much higher than that of conventional white light chips. Chen Tao, manager of the LED business unit of Keheng, said that it is not difficult for a single chip to make white light. It is only necessary to make quantum wells of red, green and blue light on the same chip, and white light is obtained by mixing light colors. This is similar to the principle of white light obtained by mixing RGB, and the process is very complicated. Moreover, the light decay of the red, green and blue quantum wells should be kept in sync, otherwise color temperature drift will occur.
As for the cost issue, Chen Tao analyzed that the way to obtain white light through RGB mixing is much higher than the cost of white light mixed with blue light chips, which is why fluorescent powder is favored. In addition, the light emitted by the white light chip is more glaring, and it is necessary to add materials such as diffusion powder to soften the light, which is almost the same as the cost of the yellow phosphor.
Throughout the domestic phosphor market, yellow powder has been sold for 8 cents per gram, and even there is a coup to buy red powder to send yellow powder. It seems that KAIST is not very clear about the price of phosphors. Although its innovative spirit is worthy of promotion, but complex technology, low price, narrow application area (LED backlight), I believe that there will not be too many companies in the country to follow suit. Consumers don't buy it.
