If you want to do a good job in smart home, mastering the three-terminal technology experience is the key

There are only a handful of companies. Is the company unwilling to do it? Of course not, but the technical difficulty of whole-house intelligence is high, and the research and development cycle is too long. In the first two years, there are thousands of companies that claim to be smart homes. Now it seems that companies that truly realize the intelligence of the whole house have given up on continuing research and development because the cost of trial and error is too high, or the capital chain is broken and "dead" on the road of research and development.

Rumor has it that some bosses have sold their villas, selling stocks equal to the price of the villas. ... .. Almost everything, it took more than 6 years to make a relatively stable smart home system. There are also many companies whose smart home department leaders have left because the industry has been slow to produce output. ..

There is already a joke in the industry: the company that spent 100 million yuan in this industry is dead, and the company that spent 200 million yuan is still alive for the time being.

Why is it difficult to be a smart home business? The reporter from "Smart Product Circle" visited Huang Minqiang, the managing director of Yunhai IoT, a smart home solution provider, and listened to him talk about the difficulty of building a smart home.

Smart home system is a three-terminal architecture

The technology of smart home seems to be simple: ready-made mobile APP or computer interface control technology, plus embedded software and hardware manufacturing technology, all together form the basic framework of smart home technology.

However, according to this "1+1=2" idea, many home appliance companies and Internet companies use simple technology overlays to design smart home frameworks and find that the systems designed in this way are basically unusable.

In fact, smart home is a systematic project, which must organically combine the cloud, control and terminal.

Taking cloud technology as an example, with the development of computer technology today, there are no technical difficulties in using existing technologies to realize Internet access and remote control of hardware devices. Considering the cloud as a switch, there is no need to consider the business logic of the control terminal and the terminal, and the same is true for the other two terminals. Therefore, many smart home public clouds are basically transparent and do not participate in the formulation of terminal protocols.

But in the smart home system, each product has its own characteristics, and it is unreasonable to use a unified protocol. This unreasonable will bring a great burden to the efficiency (computing power) and bandwidth of the cloud. Even if 90% of the public cloud problems are solved by technical means, 90% of the problems are still not enough, and the remaining 10% of the unreasonable needs to be optimized through continuous trial and error.

That is to say, public cloud enterprises must cooperate with different products of the terminal and control terminal to jointly optimize the cloud to make it operate reasonably. This is also a long process.

The "Triple Realm" of Smart Home System

According to the maturity of the organic combination of the three ends, the smart home system can also be divided into three realms: viewable, usable, and sellable.

For smart home businesses, the visible stage is easy to implement. Generally, enterprises can control the single product combination through the APP within one year, and realize the "smart linkage" demonstration in the cloud. At this stage, the cloud, the controller and the terminal are initially connected to each other.

To reach the usable stage, enterprises also need to solve the basic stability of product lines and systems. Simply put, the products in the system will not be easily disconnected, and can stably play the product functions, and cooperate with other products to complete the system linkage function. Only a stable system can bring a better experience to users, and the time spent at this stage is generally more than one year.

But at this time, the stability of the system and the user experience have not yet reached the level of sale. It is difficult to make system-level products available for sale. Available but not available for sale is a major feature of the immature technology of smart home products. The saleable stage is to fix and optimize various problems on the basis of availability to make them acceptable to the market.

In order to achieve a good user experience, it is necessary to consider the scalability of the system, and have correct predictions and corresponding solutions for the problems that arise after adding products. It is unrealistic to upgrade all terminal equipment remotely, which requires that the product must be fully tested on the three-terminal protocol, terminal stability and reliability before sale.

It can be seen to start a year, it can be used for another year, it will take a while to sell it, and the perfection will never end. Smart home involves the collaborative optimization of software and hardware technologies, and it is conceivable how high the research and development costs are.

Who will win the smart home cloud platform?

There is enough capital, but lack of enough experience in three-terminal technology, and it cannot solve the system problems of smart home. From the perspective of the industry ecological pattern, it is even more interesting to look at the cloud platform battle for smart homes.

Represented by Ali, the Internet-based smart home public cloud is still being explored. Major home appliance companies want to use their own brands and channels to complete the layout, but today there is no good system to provide users with, and they still use APP and the cloud to cover them with single products, and the efficiency and user experience are not good enough.

As an enterprise with three-terminal experience, Huawei has the deepest knowledge in this regard. Among the many cloud platform players, Huawei is the most capable and qualified to set up a smart home public cloud for the majority of enterprises to use.

It is rumored that before the OpenLife ecosystem, Huawei sent an IoT team to visit many smart home companies, and used these manufacturers and their own business experience to design the Huawei OpenLife ecosystem, allowing companies to use the Huawei cloud platform to store and analyze data.

However, Huawei has continued to improve and optimize so far, and has not yet fully formulated the three-terminal agreement for smart home products.
