Google CEO is right! India really wants to make a $30 smartphone

Electronic enthusiasts eight o'clock: Beijing time on January 9 evening news, according to Indian media reports, the Indian government has asked local mobile phone manufacturers to produce less than 2000 Indian rupees (about 29 US dollars) of smart phones.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai just said last week that although Android OEMs have launched low-cost smartphones for $100 and $50, the price of the next wave of low-cost smartphones should be Dropped to $30.

Pichai said at the time that for emerging markets like India, a $30 smartphone would be needed to get more consumers to access the Internet.

Today, the Indian government is already working towards this goal. According to three people familiar with the matter, the Indian government recently held a meeting to require domestic mobile phone manufacturers such as Micromax, Intex, Lava and Karbonn to produce smartphones with less than $30, aimed at promoting mobile payments and transactions.

So far, the project has not invited Apple, Samsung and Chinese mobile phone manufacturers to participate.

An industry executive said: "The Indian government has begun to actively promote mobile payments and transactions, and there has been explosive growth. At the same time, the government is aware of the lack of low-cost smartphone products on the market."

According to people familiar with the matter, the Indian government hopes that these mobile phone manufacturers will be able to launch 20 million to 25 million low-cost smartphones to the market. The government will not provide subsidies for this, but will require mobile phone manufacturers to solve the problem of how to reduce prices.

An industry executive said: "The government wants Indian consumers to trade and pay for it at any time. In the future, these phones will support Aadhaar, which supports the Indian identity verification system."

According to insiders, developing smartphones under $30 faces many challenges. For example, on the basis of ensuring low prices, high-performance processors are also required to support functions such as fingerprint recognition. In addition, the manufacturing process must be guaranteed.

Currently, the minimum price of Indian 3G mobile phones is about INR 2,500 (about US$ 37), and 4G mobile phones are selling at a higher price. Of the nearly one billion mobile phone users, only 300 million use smartphones. (Li Ming)
